On Sunday, August 17, the St. John Armenian Apostolic Church of San Francisco joyfully celebrated the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God, one of the most beloved feast days of the Armenian Church. The day was marked by solemn worship, the traditional Blessing of the Grapes, and a vibrant community picnic filled with fellowship, food, and Armenian culture.
In preparation for this sacred celebration, a devoted group of youth from St. Gregory Armenian Church of Pasadena and Holy Apostles Armenian Church of Crescenta Valley traveled to San Francisco on August 15. They spent the weekend in fellowship and spiritual preparation alongside members of St. John ACYO. The youth stayed at the church, shared meals together, explored the beautiful city of San Francisco, and engaged in meaningful discussions and prayerful reflections. Their presence brought a spirit of renewal and joy to the St. John community.
During their stay, the youth eagerly helped prepare for Sunday’s festivities—assisting with food preparation, organizing picnic logistics, and rehearsing for their participation in the Divine Liturgy. On Sunday morning, many joined the choir in leading the faithful in hymns of praise, while others served on the altar alongside the clergy and deacons.
Following the Divine Liturgy, the traditional Blessing of the Grapes took place in the church courtyard. Rev. Fr. Mesrop Ash led the special service with the assistance of more than 12 deacons and acolytes, accompanied by the voices of the choir. Over 200 bags of grapes were blessed and distributed to the faithful, symbolizing the fullness of God’s creation and the gift of new life in Christ.
The celebration then continued with the annual parish picnic. The aroma of delicious Armenian food filled the air, welcoming parishioners and guests to enjoy a meal together. A highlight of the afternoon was when youth from the visiting parishes joined St. John ACYO members in lively Armenian folk dancing. Experienced dancers shared their knowledge with those eager to learn, creating moments of joy and unity that embodied the spirit of the day.
In his remarks, Fr. Mesrop expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dn. Charles Cherezian, St. John Youth Director, for his leadership in organizing the weekend, as well as to all the ACYO members from Los Angeles and San Francisco who contributed their time and energy. Also to Greg Cherezian and Dan Railey for preparing the delicious food. He also extended thanks to the altar servers, choir members, and countless volunteers whose devotion and hard work made the celebration a great success.
This year’s Feast of the Assumption at St. John Armenian Church was more than a traditional observance—it was a powerful expression of faith, unity, and community. The collaboration between the youth of different parishes not only enriched the celebration but also strengthened bonds of friendship and love in Christ.
