600 pounds of lamb, 100 pounds of butter, 1,000 eggs, 300 pounds of onions, 100 pounds of rice, and 100 pounds of cheese. Sounds like the supplies for an army?
Not quite. It’s a partial shopping list in preparation for St. John Armenian Church’s Annual Food Festival slated for Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20, 2013 starting at noon both days and lasting through the evening.
Celebrating its 71st festival year, St. John Church, 275 Olympia Way, San Francisco, CA is getting ready to welcome the more than 2,000 visitors who come every year to sample exotic Armenian dishes, and take-home foods.
Available as dinners or ala carte options, vegetarian delicacies include Imam Bayeldi, stuffed eggplants; Sarma, rolled stuffed grape leaves; Vospov Kheyma, lentil patties; Sou Bereg, a boiled baked dough filled with cheese; Spinach Beoreg, cheese filled dough pillows, and many other non-meat dishes.
Meat dishes such as Shishkebab skewered barbecued lamb; Chicken skewers; Luleh Kebab, the Armenian long hamburger; Meat Beoregs, flaky dough triangles; and Kufta, a meatball within a meatball, will be available to guests.
Also on the menu will be mouth watering desserts such as Kadaif, shredded dough with sweetmeats; Paklava, filo dough with nuts; Cheoreg, a slightly sweet dessert; and other coffee-type pastries.
Both men and woman parishioners are starting to work in the newly remodeled kitchens in readiness for the October event.
Armenian music and dancing with welcome participation from guests is slated for both nights.
There is no admission fee for the festival which is the church’s main fundraiser.
Church tours will be available during the festival.
