Jrakalouyts Badarak - Candlelight Divine Liturgy

Friday, January 5, 2024 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Jrakalouyts Badarak, or the Candlelight Divine Liturgy, is a deeply revered service in the Armenian Apostolic Church, held on the evening of January 5th. This service serves as the prelude to the celebration of the Nativity and Theophany of Jesus Christ, observed by the Armenian Church on January 6th.

The highlight of Jrakalouyts is the ceremonial lighting and blessing of candles, symbolizing Jesus Christ as the Light of the World. This ceremony is deeply emblematic, representing the divine light of Christ guiding the faithful through darkness. Parishioners participate in a solemn procession, carrying the illuminated candles. This procession is not only a beautiful visual spectacle but also a poignant reminder of the light of Christ shining in the world.

The liturgy of Jrakalouyts is characterized by its unique hymns, prayers, and scriptural readings that reflect the themes of Christ's Nativity and His revelation (Theophany) to the world. This service is an opportunity for the faithful to gather and immerse themselves in the spiritual significance of these holy events.
